Clock View Hospital, Liverpool:
The historic parkland character of Walton in Liverpool, and its proximity to the historic Bootle Docks, provided ample inspiration and reference for a strong health care vision for the site. The ‘wooded’ parking areas and circulation routes provide a calming arrival experience whilst the south facing entrance garden offers places to pause before entry or upon leaving the centre. The strong interplay between the building and external elements deliver generous light and flowing therapeutic spaces with publicly accessible areas subtly separated from private user zones by innovative security solutions rather than wire mesh fencing. Twelve bespoke service-user courtyards were designed to support the recovery journey of 85 in-patients with acute mental illness and dementia. Four bold vegetation ‘biomes’ provide strong landscape structure to balance with the building, providing direct and much needed visual interest and proximity to nature from within the most intimate of building spaces. The building was constructed by a Farrans and Heron Bros., joint venture, through a public private partnership with LSHP.
