Burgage Square

Burgage Square, Wakefield, commissioned by English Cities Fund UK Ltd.
The creation of a new destination square as a stepping stone between the soon to be relocated station and retail heart of Wakefield was conceived by Camlin Lonsdale at the masterplanning stage, as part of a comprehensive reshaping of the city’s public realm. Now delivered the space provides the setting for the public life of the new mixed-use quarter and is conceived to offer a broad range of leisure opportunities akin to a river, where the backwaters and eddies provide refuge from the main flow of movement. Reference is also made to ancient ’burgage plots’ of the medieval city which is a distinctive characteristic of the adjacent urban grain.
