The new building footprint and spaces have been influenced by the grain of the ancient ’burgage plots’ of the old city and a public space destination ‘Burgage Square’ is an integral part of the scheme design. The success of this new square has been recently recognised by a Civic Society Award (March 2011). A new strategic route was also completed last year, fulfilling the promise of an ‘Emerald Ring’ advocated in Koetter Kym’s Renaissance vision, in which pedestrian experience is optimised by challenging vehicular primacy.
